Established in 1982, the Golden Joystick Awards is the world’s longest-running and best-known gaming awards ceremony. The only annual awards voted for by gamers, the Golden Joysticks is a highlight of the games industry calendar and one of our favourite UK events here at The Game Show. With over nine million votes cast this year, the Golden Joysticks 2014 once again proved why it is the biggest award show in the world of gaming and below follows the Golden Joysticks 2014 winners.

Dark Souls II scooped the most prestigious gong of the afternoon and was awarded Game of the Year. Dark Souls II was the resounding winner as voted for by the world’s gamers. Game Show RPG nut Kevin McDonald highly rates the Souls series and Dark Souls II’s award was met with a smug nod of satisfaction.

Hideo Kojima is one of the most influential and important people in the world of games development and quite rightly was the winner of the Golden Joysticks 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award. He has worked in the industry for almost 30 years and without him gaming as we know it would be a unrecognisable. Creator, director and writer of the ground-breaking Metal Gear Solid series, as well as the adventure games Snatcher and Policenauts, he also produced series’ Zone of Enders, Boktai and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.

On receiving the honour, Kojima said, “Thank you very much for presenting me with this prestigious Golden Joystick Award. To be recognised with this award means a huge amount to me.”

Open world zombie survival horror DayZ picked up both Best Original Game and Best Indie Game. Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft the free-to-play card game scooped Best Online Game and Best Mobile Game while one of my favourite games of last gen Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag won Best Visual Design and Best Audio with the games creators Ubisoft Montrea somewhat controversially winning Studio of the Year.

Fan-favourite Oculus Rift grabbed Innovation of the Year for the second year running and The Witcher III: Wild Hunt was named as Most Wanted again after being exclusively revealed at the ceremony.

The winner of the Golden Joysticks 2014 Gaming Personality of the Year was won by PewDiePie.
